Five important stories you might have missed this week
The US is preparing for military action against multiple countries. In the White House this is known as The Trump Doctrine, an attempt to stake out a Sphere of Influence where America can exert power to its own advantage. Cover for the actions is being provided by a range of excuses including attempts to combat drug smuggling or to protect Christians. But the aims appear to be targeting oil rich states, cowing regional rivals, regime change or all at once. This week Trump told journalists on Airforce One there could be US troops deployed or airstrikes carried out in Nigeria “to protect Christians”. Meanwhile NBC reported the administration has begun detailed planning to send American troops and intelligence officers into Mexico “to target drug cartels”. And Iraqi Defence Minister Thabet al-Abassi says the US has warned him of imminent military operations in the region and told Iraq to keep pro-Iran armed factions in Iraq from intervening. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth ended his call saying that “this is your final notice… and you know very well how the current administration will respond.” At the same time the US military force that is threatening to depose Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro continues to grow
The NATO drone wall to protect against Russian attacks along the alliance’s eastern flank will be operational “within months”, the Chair of NATO’s Military Committee Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone announced. “The alliance’s Allied Command Transformation in Norfolk [Virginia] is already working on that. There is a lot of stuff on the market which will fulfil our immediate needs so we set up a new activity which is Eastern Sentry, integrating all the air defence that we already have on our eastern flank. The alliance is stronger than our adversaries, and we will stay with Ukraine up to the day that peace will break out.”

By combining LED technology and nanomaterials, researchers have created a therapy that eliminates cancer cells using localised heat without damaging healthy tissue. A team of scientists from the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Porto in Portugal have developed materials capable of converting near-infrared light, or NIR, efficiently and safely into heat that can be highly targeted against cancer cells. The team’s findings have been published in the journal ACS Nano
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has warned Tehran may face evacuation. Water reserves have fallen to just 5% after months without rain with just a week and a half until the Iranian runs out of drinking water, according to local media

Again an amazing piece, Mark. It is most informative and highlighted the madness of the Trump regime. It informed me of issues, some of which I had not contemplated. I fail to understand why, for example, Israel bombed Qatar without any comment from world leaders. Trump is attacking fishing and other vessels near Venezuela and in the Caribbean, again without sanctions from anyone. He is allowing the murder of people without any checks or balances just claiming they are drug smugglers - no evidence! This maniac is causing havoc and death without any comeback, not a single comment from anyone. How much more can Trump do before someone has the courage to challenge him?
I do not understand where this trillion dollar pay package for Musk is even coming from.
